Shri Jawaharlal Nehru | Prime Minister of India
Jawaharlal Nehru was the Primefirst Minister of free India. The great leader was born at Allahabad on November 14, 1889. He was the only son of his illustrious father Pandit Motilal Nehru. His father was a leading lawyer of Allahabad High Court. Jawaharlal received his education in England and became a barrister. More interested in politics than law, he was impressed by Mahatma Gandhi's approach to Indian inde- pendence. He joined the Indian National Congress under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi in 1919; in 1929 he became its president. He was a man of iron-will and strong character.
He was not only a great leader but also a great scholar and a writer. He wrote a number of books of great merit. His The Dicvovery of India is a good piece of litera- ture. Nehru was a great lover of children. Children called him "Chacha Nehru". His birthday on November 14, is celebrated as the 'Children's Day' all over India. He raised the name of India among the nations of the world. His contribution to world peace was in the shape of 'panchsheel'. He promoted democracy, socialism, secularism, and unity, adapting modern values to Indian conditions. Nehru, a true disciple of Mahatma Gan- dhi, died on 27th May, 1964 at the age of seventy five. His daughter, Indira Gandhi also became the prime minister of India at a subsequent time.
